THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (July 22ND & 23RD, 2016) – Night number thirteen of weekly racing saw 78 different cars show up over the last two days for the 18TH Annual Super Stock Showdown presented by Shamrock Bolt & Screw Company. Another week went by without not very much rain at the track. The big issue for the week leading up to the event was temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s almost every day and then temps of 102 degrees on Friday afternoon and 100 degrees on Saturday afternoon. Despite the hot temps, the track crew had the wide surface ready to go with only a little delay of the start times to allow for the sun to get a little lower on the horizon.

The pre-race ceremonies kicked off each night with the invocation followed by the presentation of the nation’s colors during the National Anthem by several different cars each night.

FRIDAY NIGHT

First up on the agenda for the race program was heat racing for the Pure Stocks and Super Stocks, where the top two cars locked into Saturday night’s big money race.

The intermission was next and gave everyone a chance to make a pit stop at the restrooms and get some of the great concession food and a great ice cold Coca-Cola product. One lucky 50/50 winner walked off with over $100 for their winning ticket. There were also some other winners of free tickets to future races.

TOP THREE

The first feature on the track after intermission was for the Pure Stocks. Rick Edgerton (27 – Fort Smith, AR) made it to victory lane as Chris Perkins (88 - Rudy. AR) finished second and Austin Farnam (119 – Fort Smith, AR) wound up third.

In the first Super Stock Qualifying Feature, Chuck Knight (11X- Fort Smith, AR) cross the finish line first over Dan Leatherman (64L – Muskogee, OK) and Richie Tosh (3 – Salado, AR).

The second Super Stock Qualifying Feature saw Wayne Brooks (UFO – Bald Knob, AR) take the win over Jay Rierson (71 – Booneville, AR) and Ray Phipps (L7 – Pocola, OK).

SATURDAY NIGHT

After the pre-race ceremonies, the race program started with heat racing for the IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Modifieds and USRA Modifieds.  Plus the Super Stocks ran two last chance qualifying features, where the top four made it to the big money A feature later in the evening.

The intermission was next and gave everyone a chance to stretch their legs and grab some water and other cooling beverages from the concessions and some great food, along with getting one of the really nice event shirts from Kevin and the gang from Strap In Racewear at the T-Shirt booth. One lucky 50/50 winner walked off with almost $200 for their winning ticket. There were also some other winners of free tickets to future races. Waymon Harris also interviewed the previous race winners during their trophy presentation and photo sessions.

TOP THREE

Just before intermission, Richie Tosh (3 – Salado, AR) took home the win in the first Super Stock last chance qualifier ahead of Heath Teel (14T – Walnut Ridge, AR) and Jim Philpot (25 – Greenwood, AR).

The second Super Stock last chance qualifier saw H Palmer (X15 – Muldrow, OK) cross the finish line first over Ray Phipps (L7 – Pocola, OK) and Matt Rush )55 – Stillwell, OK).

After intermission, the IMCA Sport Mods took to the track for their A Feature. Logan Ellis (118 – Wagoner, OK), who finished second the previous feature, took the win over Dustin Leatherman (94 – Muskogee, OK) and Lynn Combs (00 – Fort Gibson, OK).

Up next was the IMCA Modified A Feature where 15 year old Kayden Menasco (49K – Dora, OK) was able to outrun Tate Cole (89 – Muskogee, OK) for the win as Eric Beshoner (12E – Fort Smith, AR) finished in third.

The USRA Modified A Feature was on the track next for their feature where Myles Newman (III – Alma, AR) picked up the win on a Turn 4 pass to the inside over Brian Parker (10 – Owasso, OK) as Brandon Hunter (1/4 – Alma, AR) finished in third.

The last A Feature action was for the Super Stocks and was the biggest of the weekend with a purse of over $17,000 and a whopping $5,000 to win. After 40 laps, Burl Woods (135 – Republic, MO) took home the big check and trophy for the win over 22 other competitors. Tony Anglin (54A – Walnut Ridge, AR) was able to challenge Woods a few times, but had to settle for second while Cody Jones (92 – Fort Smith, AR) ran a steady, patient race to pick up the third place money.
