Martin Takes SOLMS, Justice Wins First, McCarty & Johnston Win Again and Cole Picks Up Two Trophies

THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (August 6TH, 2016) – Night number fourteen of weekly racing saw 107 different cars show up for the Annual Coca-Cola Summertime Classic presented by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Fort Smith. The event featured the Topless Modified Mayhem, the Southern Outlaw Late Model Series and free back to school backpacks for the kids. Yet another week went by without any rain at the track with temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s almost every day of the week and a few days of 100+ degrees. Race day proved to be a little better with temps only in the low 90’s.

The pre-race ceremonies kicked off the night with the invocation followed by the presentation of the nation’s colors during the National Anthem by three different cars.

The race program started with heat racing for the Pure Stocks, the IMCA Sport Mods, the SOLMS Late Models, the Super Stocks, the IMCA Modifieds and the USRA Modifieds.

At the start of the last heat race of the night, the USRA Modified car, driven by Justin Rexwinkle, was involved in a rollover accident. His car was in the middle of two other cars and their tires came together which caused the car to “tire hop.”  This caused Justin’s car to become airborne where it was then contacted by another car and caused it to barrel roll. His car rolled a few times and came to rest against the outside wall of the track. Some of the safety roll bars of his car had to be cut away for his safe and precautionary removal from his wrecked car. Contrary to published media reports, there was never a fire associated with this accident. Justin was taken to an area hospital to be checked out and was released with only minor bumps and bruises. A big thank you goes out to the emergency crews and the Pocola Fire Department for their quick response and expert assistance with this accident.

The intermission was next and gave everyone a chance to make a pit stop at the rest rooms, along with getting themselves a new shirt from Strap In Racewear at the T-Shirt booth. One lucky 50/50 winner walked off with over $200 for their winning ticket. There were also some other winners of free tickets to future races. Waymon Harris also interviewed the previous race winners during their trophy presentation and photo sessions.

Plus, during intermission, 124 backpacks stuffed full of back-to-school supplies were given out to the kids in attendance. A big thanks goes out to everyone that donated time, money and materials for these backpacks, including Gryner Construction.

TOP THREE

The first race on the track after intermission was the Pure Stock A Feature that saw Brandy Justice (327) take home their first win of the season at Tri-State Speedway as Austin Farnam (119 – Fort Smith, AR) and Jalen Brewton (41B – Alma, AR) battled it out for second and third.

Up next was the IMCA Sport Mods for their A Feature. Veteran driver, Ken McCarty (1 – Rogers, AR), returned once again to Victory Lane as the previous feature winner, Logan Ellis (118 – Wagoner, OK) finished close behind. Chad Summerford (03 – Centerton, AR) finished in third.

The SOLMS Late Models hit the track next for their 25 lap A Feature. Eddie Martin (91 – Stilwell, OK) took control on lap one and never looked back to capture the win over Rob Powell (25 – Bartlesville, OK) and Will Aycock (10X – Benton, AR). The Elite World Services Hard Charger Award went to Scott Freeman (007 – Hector, AR) for his ten position improvement from his 19TH starting spot.

Up next was the IMCA Modified A Feature where Tate Cole (89 – Fort Gibson, OK) drive his topless machine to the win as Jason Payton (6 – Greenwood, AR) finished in second over previous winner, Kayden Menasco (49K – Dora, OK).

The next feature on the track was for the always fast Super Stocks. Neil Johnson (17 – Fort Smith, AR) drove his newly skinned ride through the field for the win over Tyler Chambers (XXX – Welling, OK) and Dennis Slader (19 – Muskogee, OK).

The USRA Modified A Feature was on the track last for their feature and saw Tate Cole (89 – Fort Gibson, OK) pick up the win, his second of the night, over George Martin (5* - Fort Smith, AR) as Kyle Ledford (75 – Greenwood, AR) finished in third.

NEXT TIME

Tri-State Speedway will be closed on August 13TH for a back to school break and will return to action on August 20TH, 2016 for the 8TH Annual Tillman Evans Memorial Races and Old Timer’s Races. It will also be the August bicycle races, with trophies for the winners, and two free kid’s bicycles to be given away, just for coming to the track.
